Since there is a shortage of PCR covid 19 tests and hospitals in Nigeria are requiring positive test results before they are treated, Nigeria had to create their own inexpensive test kit. The Nigerians kit has a lower detection rate than the PCR but it is good enough.
The Nigerian government was able to provide its country and is continuously working at providing enough covid 19 tests despite the limited resources and challenges they have. They also sent their scientists to train in China on testing before covid 19 hit their country. They created isolation centers and are reporting a decrease in cases.
I agree that Africans are very resilient because they can be faced with a lot of challenges and problems but they will find a way to turn the situation around and figure out how to overcome the problems and find solutions. In the article, the Nigerians figured out a way to construct cheap and effective covid 19 test kits despite the financial and population problems.

I agree that African people will always need to persevere. Life doesn't stop for anyone, and COVID-19 definitely does not stop for anyone. Considering that health care in Nigeria is poorly developed and is not an adequate system for the crisis we face, it is amazing that they were able to create a test to adapt to what resources they have, not to mention their budgetary restrictions. I don't think it's a matter of whether or not they will always persevere, but I believe it's the ability to overcome struggle. A connection could be how Imperialism created poor economic systems (aka healthcare) in countries like Nigeria, today they are able to use their intelligence for the benefit of their own country without Europe looking over their shoulder.

ReplyDeleteI do agree that African people will always persevere. Covid has negatively impacted so many different countries. I think it's great that the African people were able to overcome their challenges and create a cheaper testing kit.
