Africa's Rise from the Downfall of European Imperialism

Summary: In the article “Good and Inclusive governance is imperative for Africa’s future,” John Mukum Mbaku highlights the goals that Africa needs to reach to benefit Africa’s future.  There are several problems that Africa needs to still overcome: weak governments, poverty, exclusive environments, and simply creating a better society for its citizens.

Analysis: I agree with how Africa needs to improve. Good governance should be built on a foundation of effective states, mobilized civil societies, and an efficient private sector. Key elements of good governance are accountability, transparency, combating corruption, citizen participation, and an enabling legal/judicial framework. Fighting poverty and improving human development in Africa must begin with creating wealth, writes Chude Jideonwo. To achieve these goals, there must be peace and security, he writes. The Rwanda Genocide in 1994 was caused by the ineffective governance and the colonization of Belgium. Belgium drove a wedge between the two ethnic groups of Rwanda, the Tutsis, and the Hutus. Belgium decided to instate the Tutsis as the “superior race” even though they made up less of the population than the Hutus. The Hutus were denied education, money, and land. Soon after the Belgium empire’s fall, this caused a massacre against the Tutsis because the Hutus took over in retaliation. This is why Africa needs to work hard to create a society and a strong government to help Rwanda’s government and the states’ fractured systems as a united group.

Discussion Question: How can Africa’s children and students help change the countries institution to lead to an improved future?

  1. Responding to your discussion question, I believe that if possible Africa's children and students should start by demanding for the very necessary change, speaking out and advocating their voices more to the people that will hear them.

  2. They should protest and hopefully spread their words on the media so everyone can hear it.
