AI Engineer Becomes First Woman To Win Africa Prize

Title: Ivory Coast’s AI Engineer Becomes First Woman To Win Africa prize

Summary: Recently an Ivorian woman won the Royal Academy of Engineering Africa. The award had previously only been won by men, but a 26-year-old engineer changed things and became the first woman to win this highly esteemed prize. Charlette N’Guessan the woman who won the award created something called Bace API. Bace API uses artificial intelligence and facial recognition to identify whether or not images are of real people or a photo of a pre-existing image. Her invention is already being used by 2 different financial institutions to detect customers’ identities.

Analysis: I feel like this a big achievement. Having someone being the first woman to win this highly coveted word is a big deal. Charlette’s achievements probably gave many young female aspiring engineers someone to look up to. She also probably inspired young women, working in predominantly male fields, that they can do the same thing men can. Charlette’s invention is already in use, and hopefully will be used by many other companies.

Discussion Questions: Do you think Charlettes invention deserved the award? What would you create in an engineering competition? Where else could Charlettes invention be used?

  1. I think that Charlette definitely deserved this award. Even in America, only about 13% of engineers are women (SWE Research). This award is obviously a sought-after achievement, and winning that award as the first woman is an even greater achievement. Her invention could be used in identification in not only banks, but also to release records (birth certificates, marriage licenses). This is a major development among engineering fields in general, but overall her success will inspire many female engineers to come.

  2. I think another use for her invention could be to detect if someone who might be talking to you online is a real person or not, like the show Catfish. Sometimes people make a fake name and use fake pictures online to trick someone, so her invention could be used to detect those people.

  3. I think that Charlotte does deserve this award, considering the breakthrough that she made in facial recognition. Her inventions could be used by many different businesses to help them understand their customers. This also gives female engineers to inspiration to continue striving for new, groundbreaking discoveries and inventions.
