The Awakening of Africa

Summary
As wealth grows in African nations, so does hope for a better future, this article was adapted by Newsela staff that tells about the newfound optimism of the African people as their economy continues to grow, but how some are still questioning whether they are out of the dark yet. Surveys found out that people from big nations in Africa are more positive in their thoughts that their economy will continue to grow. While this statement is true, there is still a massive amount of people who are under the poverty line in Africa. Africa also has been benefiting from high pricing of their goods and resources. This is accurate but currently their prices have been going down because of the economic difficulties of the countries who were trading with them. While there are all kinds of ups and downs in Africa's economy, it is still refreshing to see that Africans still have faith in their government to do better.

Analysis
I personally think that the optimism African people are showing is rightfully placed, and is a great example of how resilient Africans are. I think this to be true because we see that African cities are sprouting up, and their economies going up with them after years of being purposefully shut out by Europeans. We are starting to see African people reaching new heights and achieving them, and I think the optimism behind that is totally correct. There are lots of downs to their economy too though, like how almost half the people in Africa are still living on $1.25 a day, and how their prices on resources are going down because of politics. But, we still have to acknowledge how Africans are continuing to fight for their rightful place against the odds of corrupt governments, and bad schools resulting from imperialism and how they continue to hope that things will continue to change for the better.

 Discussion Questions

  1.  Do you think the optimism that the Africans have regarding their economy is false? Why or why not?
  2. What could be possible solutions to keep Africa’s economy healthy?
