Will it actually get worse?

Summary:

The author began with introducing the character who’s experience they were writing about. Her name was Maria Chuva, which is Portuguese for “Rain”. Maria has a 5 year old daughter named Amiel. The author continued to explain the emotions that ran through Maria’s head throughout the entire experience of the cyclone. She was explaining how the experience hurt her so bad, probably not only physically but emotionally as well. How her daughter had to go through this at such a young age and her fear for other families as they got separated from each other and became orphans.

Finally after the cyclone hit, this was the worst part. The process of putting the pieces of their life back together after this natural disaster was harder than ever imagined. The lost children that were found roaming the streets were put in displacement camps. Yes, it’s as bad as it sounds. The living conditions here were horrible, including: children sleeping on rough plastic tarps, or even the cold, bare, brick floor. The children were lucky enough to get a hold of a couple grains of rice that they had to share with everyone else. As the days went by it only got worse, and they were losing more and more children.

Analysis:

This article reminded me of The Holocaust in the sense that large amounts of innocent people suffered and died. There are many similarities on how both groups suffered. They both had terrible living conditions, not enough food etc.

Discussion Questions:

What is the best way for the U.S. to help countries like Africa in times like this?

  1. The best way for the U.S to help countries like Africa in a time like this is by supporting them with needs that they don't have, giving the shelter from the cyclones, and giving them correct nutrition instead of them just eating nothing and starving to death.

  2. The best way to help Africa when natural disasters occur is to give money and supplies to them so they might have a better chance at recovering faster, and at losing less lives.
